I was gunning my engine the other day and now i can't get any power from my engine..?

i was "pedal-happy" the other day and now i cant get my car to pick up speed? all sound and little power... do you think the plugs and wires might be burnout or something? Also incase you need to know i have a 99 Mercury Cougar 2.5L V6. please help me out here!
