The person can read my message but i cant read thiers, whats the problem@?

when i chat with my friends, they can read my messages but i cant read thiers.it will tell me that my friends are typing but when they send it to me i will not be ale to view.does it have to do with setting on my laptop?if so suggest to me the links you think i should follow to address this problem.
