NASA shooting a bomb to hit the moon?

ok so i was whatch the nightly news and i saw that nasa was going to shoot a rocket up into space and let it hit the moon to see if there is any water or ice in the moon or how much there is? tell me your thoughts on this? is it true? why in the world what if somethings goes wrong and rock or pice of moon comes falling down? in my opoion they might be asking for trouble. I heard it was going to happen on a friday i think this friday at 7 am and you could see it with any telescope or maybe the human eye?
