How to tell someone you care b4 its to late?

my friend has cancer and its not looking good. i have had friends who have died without me saying how much i appriciated them and loved them. he is married and we are purley friends but i dont want his wife to get the wrong idea, i want to give him a token just to say what a good friend he is and my thoughts and love are with him. it may sound morbid but i want him to know how much he is loved by me and what a great friend he really is b4 its to late please any ideas?
